[Manhattan is beautiful at night. The way the lights play on the rest of the city and the night sky, it is as if the entire city is a third dimension painting. Artists such as Van Gough or Da Vinci lived to see cities in all their beauty, but could they even stop and ponder the magic of the night such as this particular night in Manhattan? The beauty of the night is one of fairy tale like form. The type of setting that a woman would read about in a Harlequin romance novel. A setting fit for two, young, star crossed lovers to meet and revel in their intimacy. However, this particular night a young woman’s love can only go so far. Brittney Bailey sat at the window of her penthouse suite in The Atrium hotel. The lights were dimmed to a dull low as she sits and simply gazes out the window. In her hand, she clings to a picture of a time past. A time when she and Brandon had been so much closer. This was before her heart had been broken, before she had met Eric, before she lost everything she had.]
“They say blood is thicker than water. But have you ever pondered for even the slightest second that saying? Blood is thicker than water, indeed. Our blood may be our life fuel and sustenance, but why is it that water is present everywhere else? Our body is made of a large percentage of water, we need water to survive, water is the sustenance for all walks of life. So blood is thicker and denser. It is still water we need for life to continue in all its glory.”
[She opens the window slightly as tiny droplets of rain begin to fall from the sky in an eerie mist upon the city. Brittney extends her hand out to feel the mist.]
“Brandon, I remember as children we used to play in the rain each time a light sprinkle or storm came. Mother would be so furious because we used to come in soaking wet. ‘You two will catch your death one day,’ she would say. We loved the rain, didn’t we? Water…[She pauses and glances at the photograph.] seems to be in my life so very much lately.”
[Tears begin to burn at her eyes as she gently wipes them away.]
“Do you remember when we were in school and Clint Harvey told me he could not take me to homecoming because he promised to take someone else? I cried for hours that night, but it was you, Brandon, that said you would take her just so he could take me. You even called them both and explained the whole idea until things worked out in my favor. I knew that day that my brother was more than just a person in my family. I knew that day that you were a part of my heart. But now, I’m not sure anymore.”
[The tears are too strong now as they begin to flow softly down her face. Brittney looks at the misting rain as it splatters against the window.]
“Eric was the only thing that made me happy. He was the life I needed to continue on. He was the fuel that fired my inspiration, my pleasure, and my desire to go on living. But, you couldn’t stand it could you, Brandon? Little sister finally found happiness from someone other than you and you couldn’t stand being second in my life! After all you and I have done for one another, Brandon, I expected you out of anyone that knew me to accept the fact that Eric and I were in love. Because of you…[She pauses again to look at the picture and then back at the city lights in the rain.]…because of you, I lost my best friend, my brother, and the love of my life. Brandon, love is like a flower. It has to be nurtured and cared for tenderly for it to blossom and grow. However, if you smother it, deprive it of the attention it deserve, or refuse to care for it, it will wilt and die. You have starved our flower for too long now. There is no pain greater in the world then that of a broken heart. It is a crime that must be resolved with extreme punishment. You are a felon in this relationship and I will not tolerate it any longer. He’s not gone forever Brandon, he never even left. [For the first time this night Brittney smiles.] It was all my idea for him to “leave this life” because it is all I want to do nowadays. Leave this life of extreme hell and heartache that you have bestowed upon me, your baby sister. He faked his death so the world would never expect him to return again. Especially you of all people big brother.”
[She clutches the picture tightly in her hand.]
“Eric is back and he is back to exterminate the man that broke my heart. You see, Brandon, our blood may be the same, but we will never be each other’s life force again. I will never be able to forgive you for trying to hurt me both physically and emotionally. As far as I am concerned it is not Eric who is dead to me now, it is you.”
[She unfolds her hand to reveal the crushed photograph and drops it outside of her window. The camera follows the picture as it floats down in the misty rain into the darkness of the city streets below.]
