Fade in.
We’re backstage at Shotglass Saturday night, hours away from the show. The parking area is about half full, with VWA trucks lining the background. Crew members are moving around within the frame, busily preparing for another show to be aired.
Out of nowhere it seems, a black H1 truck comes screeching around a corner and whips around into a parking spot. Blaring Pantera, the truck comes screaming to a halt and shuts off. The drivers side door opens and out walks Mike Stryker, all business as he opens the back of the truck and gets his gym bag. Slung over his shoulder, he begins to march his way through the parking area towards the locker rooms. Dressed in a heavy sweatshirt, jeans, boots, and sunglasses, and wearing a look that says he’s not to be trifled with. The camera shakes as it struggles to keep pace with the superstar. He turns a corner and nearly runs over one Gene Anderson, who snaps into reporter mode. Stryker barely notices anything.
Gene: Mike!! Got a minute?
Stryker doesn’t even miss a beat as he keeps walking. Anderson does what he can to catch up as the camera does the same.
Gene: Mike!!! Slow down!!!
Stryker gets to his dressing room door before surrendering to the notion that he’s not getting away without making nice with the VWA’s lead reporter. He straightens up and breathes deep, awaiting the barrage.
Gene: Mike, we haven’t seen you in a good long time around here. You were dead silent all week before your tag match, and then you didn’t show up because someone-
Stryker: Seth.
Gene: Excuse me?
Stryker: Seth Xavier. That’s why I was locked in my locker room.
Gene: Seth Xavier says he had nothing to do with you being locked in your dressing room and missing the match.
Stryker: Lots of people say lots of things Gene, I believe what makes sense. Fact is that Seth Xavier has a whole lot to gain by me not being around. He knows the truth, ever since wrestlefest, he’s known who the big dog is around here. He knows who SHOULD be headed to Super Slam. Seth Xavier knows that he doesn’t deserve a thing that he’s “won” here, he lost at Wrestlefest, and his manager conveniently is the president of the company.
Gene: He says he didn’t know what Michael Kyser was doing either.
Stryker: What did I just say? I know what he SAYS. I’m not interested in the claims of a man who’s already shown he’ll do anything to win, to get that main event match at Super Slam. I know he claims that he didn’t know how his manager became the VWA president. I know he claims to have nothing to do with me being locked in the back last week. But I also know that every single one of these situations has been to his benefit. And when a lot of breaks start coming one guys way, it raises a red flag in my head that maybe….just maybe…he’s lying through his teeth. Bottom line is that Seth Xavier is running out of time. His “lucky breaks”, as you see it, are running out as well. He’s got a date with ZMaster, and both of them have a dance with the devil at Thunderdome. That’s where justice will be done to everyone and I’ll get what I EARNED weeks ago, my shot at my title.
Gene: Speaking of ZMaster, tonight you lock up one on one with a legend. Unquestionably this is going to be the toughest test you’ve had in the ring since coming back. Are you ready for a war?
Stryker: Gene, I was born ready for this. Z is a damn fine wrestler, and like you said, that man is a legend. But, then again, there’s more than a few people walking this planet who might call me a legend too. So I guess you can bill this as the battle of the legends. Call it what you want, but I know what it’s going to ultimately be. It’s going to be a wake up call. See, each time I get in that ring, I can tell that a lot of people seem to have forgotten exactly who the hell I am. Exactly what I’m capable of. Well, tonight is another chance to remind them all of just how good Mike Stryker is. Z talked about how important this is towards momentum. And I guess he’s got a point. But Big man, tonight’s match isn’t about momentum, it isn’t about who’s going to be on the biggest roll come Thunderdome. Tonight is about talent. Tonight is about people seeing exactly who the lead dog in the hunt is these days. Tonight is about one man proving that he’s better than the other. Too bad for you Z, I’m better. I’m not only better than you, I’m the best.
Stryker snaps off his sunglasses as he rolls on.
Stryker: Take a good look in the eyes of greatness Z. Take a good long look. Look into my eyes and ask yourself one question. Ask yourself if there’s anything at all that would give you even the slightest indication that I’m nervous. Is there anything in this look, in this stare, that makes you think I’m going to walk to that ring with anything less than my A+ game tonight? Do you see a shred of evidence that makes you honestly think you have a chance against me? The fact is that tonight is what we call a “big match” situation. Tonight is the kind of match that people look at first when they try and place you in the annals of history alongside the greatest of all time. How well you perform in the big matches of your career define you as an athlete, as a man in this industry. Now, you can search high and low for every single guy who’s ever made the mistake of trying me on for size in that ring. If you can, line them up and you ask them all who the best “big match” wrestler on the planet is. You ask each and every one of them and you’ll come back with the same answer each and every time.
Stryker points at himself and smirks.
Stryker: You’ll come back with the name Mike Stryker. Nobody, and I do mean…NOBODY, has ever been as good as I have when it comes to winning the big one. Nobody has won more matches that defined the times as I have. There’s not another so called legend in this business who’s gotten in a ring with me that hasn’t lost to the Big City Hitman. Tonight, Gene called you a legend. So that means, tonight, you’re going to join the long and distinguished list of legendary wrestlers who have gotten into the ring with Mike Stryker and then went on to find out why I’m the very best in the world. Tonight Z, you find out just how great Mike Stryker can be. Now, Gene, sorry to break it to you, but I have to get ready. After all…
It is the Big Match.
Stryker smirks again at the camera and chuckles before disappearing into his dressing room.
